A 6x4 shed suits tools and one mower. An 8x6 adds room for shelving and larger equipment. A 10x8 can support a workbench beside storage. Nominal areas are 2.23m², 4.46m² and 7.43m². However, our three matched Power sheds have smaller base areas. All retain the same 750mm-wide single door, so footprint alone cannot prove access.

Installer's Note from Matt W: Lay out the actual base with string. Then add shelving with masking tape. Mark the door swing outside and your largest item inside. This reveals awkward corners before delivery. I also mark the roof overhang separately. It can reach beyond the base and catch a fence or branch.

What size garden shed do I need?
Choose 6x4 for compact storage, 8x6 for mixed storage, or 10x8 for workshop space.
Start with the items, not the lawn. Measure the mower, bicycles, shelving and bench. Add working clearance around anything that moves. Next, compare those shapes with the model's internal measurements.
A nominal foot size gives a quick category. It does not give the structural base size. It also excludes roof overhang and wall thickness.

These are owned measurements from three related Power overlap models. They are not universal dimensions for every shed with the same label.
Is a 6x4 shed big enough?
A 6x4 shed is big enough for compact tools, one mower and shallow shelving.
Our Power 6x4 sample has a 1846mm by 1190mm base. A 300mm-deep shelf along its long wall leaves 890mm across the short dimension. That is workable for one person, but equipment handles may narrow the route.
The door is 750mm wide and 1630mm high. Measure the widest fixed part of your mower or machine. Folding handles help storage, but they do not always reduce wheel width.
Choose a 6x4 when every item has a fixed position. Wall hooks can hold long-handled tools above the mower. Avoid deep shelves on both long walls.
What fits in an 8x6 shed?
An 8x6 shed can hold a mower, tools and shelving with a central access route.
Our matched 8x6 base measures 2446mm by 1790mm. A 300mm shelf along one long wall leaves 1490mm across the short dimension. That is 600mm more clearance than the same shelf leaves in the sample 6x4.
The nominal floor area doubles from 2.23m² at 6x4 to 4.46m² at 8x6. The gain changes organisation more than it suggests. Larger equipment can sit at the back while tools remain accessible near the door.
The sample door remains 750mm wide. Moving from 6x4 to 8x6 does not automatically improve entrance clearance.
Is a 10x8 shed big enough for a workshop?
A 10x8 shed can support a compact workbench while keeping a separate storage route.
Our sample base measures 3068mm by 2380mm. A 600mm-deep bench along the long wall leaves 1780mm across the short dimension. That provides room for a person and movable equipment.
Plan the bench around the lowest usable roof edge. The Power sample has an 1869mm eaves height and 2391mm ridge. Tall cabinets should sit where the roof allows them.
Power needs a separate, qualified design. Do not run an extension lead as a permanent workshop supply. Ventilation and task lighting also need positions before shelves cover the walls.
Should I buy a shed one size bigger?
Buy one size bigger when the current layout has no clear access or growth space.
Do not upgrade by habit. A larger building costs more, needs a larger base and occupies more garden. It may also change the planning assessment.
Upgrade when seasonal items block everyday tools. Upgrade when a workbench removes the only walking route. Keep the smaller size when vertical storage solves the conflict.

Bike capacity depends on wheelbase, handlebar overlap and the door, not area alone.
Our measured bike storage guide found that staggered bikes need about 300mm each. That spacing works only when alternate handlebars can overlap. Wall racks need compatible walls and enough lifting clearance.

How much space should I leave around a shed?
Leave enough space for assembly, drainage, roof overhang and future maintenance.
There is no universal gap because models and sites differ. Follow the product instructions. Keep wall panels reachable and prevent roof water from discharging onto a neighbour's property.
Measure the roof, not only the base. Our sample 10x8 base is 3068mm by 2380mm. Its roof footprint is 3252mm by 2580mm. The roof therefore projects beyond the structural base.
