How Much Does a Garden Shed Cost in 2026?
Written by Matt W on 7th Aug 2026.
A garden shed can cost from several hundred pounds to over £10,000. Our 6 August 2026 shed-only snapshot found wood at £429–£3,334. Plastic was £459–£4,538, while metal was £2,250–£10,565. A checked 6x4 wooden shed and matching Fastfit grid totalled £603 before assembly. Budget separately for ground preparation, fitting, security, access and future maintenance.
Key takeaways
- The shed price is not the installed project price.
- Our checked wooden range starts below plastic, while premium metal extends highest.
- A 6x4 Power shed and Fastfit grid totalled £603 on 6 August 2026.
- An integral floor still needs a firm, level foundation below it.
- Annual timber treatment is a real ownership cost and may protect the guarantee.
- Access, removal and electrical work need separate allowances.
Installer's Note from Matt W: The cheapest quote often leaves one job unnamed. Ask who levels the ground, disposes of spoil and anchors the shed. Confirm whether fitting includes the floor and roof covering. I also photograph the prepared base with measurements before assembly. It settles disputes and catches sizing errors early.

How much does a garden shed cost in 2026?
Expect several hundred pounds for an entry shed and much more for premium construction.
Our store snapshot covered 411 shed listings on 6 August 2026. Wooden sheds ranged from £429 to £3,334. Plastic sheds ranged from £459 to £4,538. Metal sheds ranged from £2,250 to £10,565.
Those are shed-only prices from one catalogue. They are not national averages. The live price on each product page remains the correct purchase price.
| Material | Listings checked | Checked shed-only span | Cost item to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 312 | £429–£3,334 | Treatment, roof care and possible replacement boards |
| Plastic | 50 | £459–£4,538 | Prepared foundation, anchors and compatible shelves |
| Metal | 49 | £2,250–£10,565 | Foundation, anchoring and condensation control |
What is included in a shed price?
A listed shed price covers the specified building package, not every site cost.
Check whether the package includes a floor, roof covering, lock, vents and base frame. Product pages should state those items. Never assume that an integral floor removes foundation work.
The Power 6x4 Overlap Pent includes 12mm tongue-and-groove floor and roof boards. It also includes mineral felt and a press lock. Its structural base measures 1846mm by 1190mm.
The Hormann Juno metal shed includes an aluminium bottom frame, cylinder lock, shelf and coat hooks. It still needs a suitable foundation. Different packages should not be compared by price alone.
How much is a 6x4 shed with a base?
Our checked 6x4 wooden shed and Fastfit grid totalled £603 before fitting.
The Power 6x4 Overlap Pent was £514 on 6 August 2026. The Fastfit 6x4 floor kit was £89. Their checked total was £603.
Prices can change, so use the live figures below. The grid kit measures 2000mm by 1500mm. Its tiles can be trimmed to the exact structural footprint.
Ground excavation, aggregate and disposal are not included in that sum. A grid does not correct a badly sloping site by itself.
How much does a shed base cost?
A shed base costs from a small grid kit to substantial excavation and concrete work.
Material price is only one part. Include excavation, compacted sub-base, levelling, waste removal and access. Poor access increases labour because materials move by hand.
A 6x4 plastic grid is currently £89. Larger kits use more tiles and membrane. Concrete and slab costs vary with ground, thickness and local labour.
Use our shed base guide for material quantities. Do not order from the nominal foot label. Use the product's exact base dimensions.
How much does shed installation cost?
Installation cost depends on shed construction, size, access and site readiness.
A fixed national figure would mislead. A clear, level base beside an open drive differs from a terraced garden. Long panels, narrow gates and steps all add handling time.
Ask each fitter to price the same written scope. Confirm unloading, assembly, roof covering, anchoring, packaging removal and final door adjustment. State whether a second person is included.
Do not mix base preparation and shed assembly into one vague line. Separate prices show which change created an extra charge.
Do plastic sheds cost less to own?
Plastic usually reduces coating costs, but its foundation and anchors still cost money.
The Lifetime 10x8 costs £1,659. Its double-wall HDPE panels do not need painting. Its moulded floor and 10-year warranty were checked on 6 August 2026.
The prepared foundation remains separate. Shelves may require compatible accessories. A damaged model-specific panel may also cost more than a local timber repair.
Compare the shed materials guide before assuming the lowest upkeep wins. Door access and storage fit matter more than treatment cost alone.
What maintenance costs should I budget for?
Budget for coatings, roof repairs, lock care and small replacement parts.
Power's 10-year timber guarantee requires annual treatment inside and outside. The treatment product, brushes and time therefore belong in the ownership budget.
Inspect roofing after storms and replace failed felt promptly. Keep hinges and locks working with suitable care. Clear vents and remove organic debris from every material.
Keep purchase, treatment and repair records. They help with warranty questions and any future insurance claim.
What hidden shed costs should I allow for?
Allow for access, removal, security, drainage, electrics and planning checks.
| Cost line | What to measure or request | Common omission |
|---|---|---|
| Old shed removal | Building, contents and existing base | Waste fees and difficult carrying route |
| Ground work | Slope, drainage and soil removal | Aggregate and spoil disposal |
| Assembly | Exact model and access photographs | Anchors or final door adjustment |
| Security | Stored value and insurer requirements | Ground anchor and approved lock |
| Electricity | Intended load and cable route | Qualified design and testing |
| Maintenance | Warranty conditions | Annual timber treatment |
Fixed electrical work needs a competent design and may require building-regulations notification. Check Approved Document P for England. Other UK nations use their own systems.
How do I set a realistic shed budget?
Set one budget for purchase and another for the first ten years.
- Choose the exact shed size and door requirement.
- Record every included component from the product page.
- Price the foundation from measured quantities.
- Get written fitting and access scopes.
- Add the security system required for stored items.
- Add yearly care from the warranty instructions.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a cheap garden shed?
Our checked wooden range began at £429 on 6 August 2026. Add the foundation, fitting and security before comparing final costs.
Is it cheaper to build or buy a shed?
Buying is often easier to price because the component list is defined. Self-building still needs materials, waste allowance, fixings and labour time.
Does a shed price include a base?
Usually not, unless the product description explicitly includes a base system. A floor is not the same as a foundation.
How much was a 6x4 shed and grid?
Our checked Power shed and Fastfit grid totalled £603. That 6 August 2026 figure excluded ground preparation and assembly.
Are wooden sheds expensive to maintain?
Wood needs planned coating and roof care. Some timber guarantees require annual treatment, so check the written conditions.
